The Exciting Vijayadashami Festival

Dasara is one of the biggest and most fun Hindu festivals of the year that celebrates the victory of good over evil! Here's how people celebrate this amazing festival:

Homes are decorated with beautiful flowers like marigolds and mango leaves which are considered auspicious. Rangolis with colorful designs are made at the entrances. Lanterns and festive lights are hung up to make everything bright and joyful.

At temples, devotees sing bhajans and perform special pujas to Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. The priests dress up in vibrant clothes and chant mantras from the scriptures.

Performances like plays, dances and musicals that act out stories from Hindu mythology are held. Ramlila performances are the most popular, depicting Lord Rama's battle against Ravana. The elaborate costumes, dialogues and staging make them highly entertaining to watch.

Delicious traditional sweets and savories are prepared in homes to share with family, friends and neighbors. Classic treats like laddoo, jelebi, vada, sunnundal and samosa are made along with special dishes like pongal.

In South India, beautifully decorated elephants march down the streets in grand processions. They are adorned with heavy gold and silver saddles, ornaments and silk parasols in vibrant colors.

Intricate clay or bamboo statues of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Ravana and others are made. Some effigies stand many feet tall! Craftspeople work for months preparing the statues.

On the first day, special clay pots are installed and sowing of seeds is done to signify new beginnings. Devotees bookmark the dates for important pujas and yagnas to be conducted for each day of the festival.

The streets come alive with vendors selling flowers, sweets, decorative items, toys and idols of gods. Shopkeepers stock up on ingredients for the feast. Tailors are flooded with orders for new traditional outfits.

As the festival nears, a buzz of excitement runs through the air! Statues of deities are taken out in processions where devotees dance and sing bhajans. Evenings are marked by staged performances of the Ramayana epic. The actors impress audiences with their elaborate costumes, dialogues and theatrical sets.

On Mahanavami, the military performance of Durga Puja celebrates the goddess' valor. Armored soldiers simulate her battle against evil. The idol immersion ceremony bids her farewells for the year.

Vijayadashami marks the day of victory. Effigies of Ravana stuffed with firecrackers are placed in open fields. Devotees gather to witness the fiery spectacle as flames engulf the effigies in bursts of sparks and smoke amid cries of "Jai Shri Ram!" Weeks of celebration and tradition culminate in this symbolic triumph of righteousness.

The festival is full of faith, fun, fireworks and food! It celebrates values like courage and righteousness and brings families and communities together.
